We are having a blast building with egg cartons this morning. And knocking them down is even more fun! It has been such a great opportunity for teamwork, negotiating, problem solving, structure/engineering experience, vocabulary building, and more!

We decided to start our pumpkin harvest this week, but we had a problem... "How are we going to get the pumpkins way up on the top of our tunnel?" Hmmmm...not a problem for long with this group of problem solvers! :)  We had fun with some "shake painting" today! The kids added paint to their paper in a container, then added some marbles, beads, and golf balls, snapped on the lid and started shaking! We noticed the different sounds that different balls made, observed the balls mixing our colors into new colors, saw the tracks left behind, and had lots of fun making some beautiful art!   We are having a blast with some more DIY toys today! We used wooden dowels, some fun yarn, and electrical tape to make ours. There are lots of variations that would work great too: sticks instead of dowels, ribbons or streamers instead of (or with) yarn. They are a fun way to get out and get moving!   We had some big messy fun with cornstarch & water outside this morning! A great sensory activity, and science lesson, too, since the mixture creates a "non-newtonian fluid" which has properties of both liquid and solid.    We are going to enjoy every last bit of summer weather!
 The kids spent a lot of time this past week creating an obstacle course in the yard! The planning, trial & error, teamwork, and of course, large motor work were amazing to watch! #looseparts    We had tons of fun experimenting with our brand new pendulum today. This fantastic idea from Play Counts was an awesome lesson in physics, structure and stability, cooperation, teamwork, vocabulary, and so much more!
 The kids requested some "feet painting" again today! Messy, sensory play is not just FUN, but it is so full of benefits for young children: they rely on sensory input to learn about their environment. Sensory play helps build neural connections that support thought, learning, and creativity. It supports language development, cognitive growth, fine/gross motor skills, problem solving/reasoning, and social interaction. And when kids are engaged, they are learning!

Now a full week into 2015, I have so enjoyed looking back on what an amazing year 2014 was! I was blessed enough to spend MANY special moments with some super special kids, and thankful that some of those moments were even preserved on camera. I have chosen my very favorite photos from the past year, and I hope you all will enjoy getting a glimpse of the joy, learning, friendships, and excitement that we have experienced together.
